Tree Cabling & Bracing in Murray, KY

Support for trees worth keeping: split-prone trunks, weak unions and heavy limbs held together before they fail.

Cabling & Bracing

Some trees are worth holding together.

Cabling and bracing is how you keep a valuable tree that has a structural weak spot.

Cables are installed high between major limbs or stems so they can’t spread apart in the wind.

Bracing uses threaded rods through a weak union or an old split, lower in the tree, to keep it from opening further.

Neither one cures a tree.

What they do is take stress off the weak spot and lower the odds of a big limb or a whole stem coming down.

What we look for

Trees that may need support

  • Two trunks from one base

Co-dominant stems with a tight V where they meet.

  • Bark pinched in the union

Included bark means the stems never truly fused.

  • Long, heavy limbs

Big horizontal limbs over a roof or a drive.

  • An old split

A crack in a union that hasn’t failed yet.

How we do it

Lighten the load, then support it.

Cabling usually goes hand in hand with pruning.

Taking weight off the ends of heavy limbs first means the cable has less to hold.

Cable and bracing systems are worth checking now and then, especially after big storms, as the tree keeps growing.

Not every tree is a good candidate.

If a split is too far gone or the wood is decayed, we will tell you, and removal may be the safer call.

Will cabling save a split tree?

Sometimes. Cabling and bracing can hold a sound tree with a weak union.

A badly split or decayed tree is usually safer removed.

Does cabling hurt the tree?

Done properly, it supports the tree without girdling it. Hardware is installed through the wood, not wrapped around it.
